Coach Craig willingly allowed me to shoot his tennis lesson with Margaret Jones, senior at SMU. He wanted me to get on the court and be right up in the action. This made my job capturing the assignment much easier. He made time for me to take pictures after the lesson as well.
I really struggled coming up with an idea for the environmental portrait. I started to think of my friends who are jewelry designers and painters, but I figured the shooting environment would not be aesthetically pleasing. Then, I thought of the tennis coach that plays at the courts right across from sorority row.
The lighting was perfect. The sun was starting to set, so any harsh shadows began to disappear. I focused on catching the action – the ball flying in the air, a hit, and Craig instructing Margaret. I focused on Coach Craig and let the background describe who he is and what he does. Tennis is his passion, and you can tell by these photos.
